There are two kinds of silicon steel:
CRNGO: Cold rolled steel without grain orientation. This silicon steel is made without any special pressing to control the crystal orientation (which is the overall texture of the material). This mixture of nondirectional particles produces an isotropic material (in which magnetism is omnidirectional).
This is the less expensive option and is used when cost takes precedence over efficiency, where magnetic flux does not have to be constant. CRNGO is found in generators and motors with moving parts.
CRGO: cold rolled grain oriented steel. This silicon steel is treated so that the magnetic flux is constant and oriented. It has a tight crystal orientation achieved during the rolling process. CRGO is supplied in coil form and then rolled into "cold rolled" strips of less than 2mm.
